What If Mountains Continued to Grow All the Time
Being the tallest mountain on the surface of our planet, Mount Everest's peak reaches a dizzying height of 29,030 ft. But the most amazing thing about this giant is that it's still growing! It gets one-tenth of an inch taller every year! But what if all mountains on Earth never stopped growing?
First of all, it would make flying impossible. Sailing, as well, would become too dangerous. Mountaineers wouldn’t be able to conquer mountain peaks anymore. The mass of all other mountains on Earth would be getting bigger and bigger as well. Let’s find out if this scenario is possible in real life.

SUMMARY:
-In a week, helicopters would stop flying in particularly mountainous regions. When, in about a month, mountains reach the height of 40,000 ft, people realize that traveling somewhere far away isn't as easy as it used to be – flying would become too risky.
-There are more than 100,000 seamounts in the world, with about 30,000 of them in the Pacific Ocean. That's why container and cruise ships would rest in ports until people try to figure out safe routes that won't end up in any shipwreck.
-People would start to feel altitude sickness already at the height of 8,000 ft. Climbing any higher than Everest? Unlikely.
-The mass of all other mountains on Earth would be getting bigger and bigger as well! And the more substantial the mass of something becomes, the stronger the gravity of this object gets.
-From time to time, tectonic plates collide, and the plates' touching edges get pushed upward forming new mountains. There are also volcanic mountains - molten rock starts to pile up, and eventually, a mountain is formed.
-The crust of the Red Planet isn't divided into tectonic plates, the crust doesn't move, and all the lava gets piled up into one tremendous volcano.
-By eroding the materials a mountain is made of, rivers can trigger landslides — and those don’t let the mountain grow as tall as it could otherwise.

SUMMARY:
- Hackers can install malware without your knowledge. It can easily enter your phone through MMS messages, mobile Internet, Bluetooth, or WiFi.
- There are special expensive devices to listen to phones. Typically, such a system consists of computers and a few telephones with special modifications.
- There are special listening stations that can be controlled by a professional operator with special education and extensive experience.
- So that no one can read and listen to your messages, instant messengers encrypt your dialogues. To “crack” them, you need a special decryption code.
- The most commonplace and easiest way to put your phone at risk is to leave it somewhere without a password or give it to someone “to play" with.
- The easiest and most banal way – regularly change passwords on your gadgets to protect your phone.
- An attacker won't be able to enter your profile if they know the password, but don't have an SMS code.
- Don't leave Bluetooth on if you're not using it. Hackers can connect and you won’t even notice.
- Don't connect to unknown networks! And the safest thing is to use a personal Wi-Fi modem.
- There are also apps that fully protect your phone. They block connections to dubious networks and communication channels, tell you if a strange activity has appeared on your phone, and encrypt your conversations.
- Most phones use the GSM communication protocol for calling. Unfortunately, this standard can be cracked by someone who has the necessary skills.
- You can always change it to a more secure connection, though, for example, to CDMA.
- Don't connect the phone to the computer if you're not sure that it is clear from viruses.
- If you suspect that your phone is being tapped, then just try not to discuss important information over the phone. Do it in person.

That's Why Public Toilets Don't Need Lids
Ugh, standing in line for the bathroom. Waiting your turn to a cacophony of flushes, stalls slamming open and closed, hand dryers blowing, and…other sounds. And why are some public bathrooms so stinky?
Well, one reason is that the toilets in most public bathrooms don’t have lids, so the aroma lets loose. Could it be that city planners want the smell to chase you away, thereby speeding up the line? Is that why public toilets don’t have lids?

Keep an eye on your pet! 🐱 3:34
What ancient Rome’s public bathrooms were like 4:24
Exploding toilets 💥 4:52
#publictoilet #hygiene #brightside
SUMMARY:
- Lids keep you from getting sprayed when you flush! They also prevent stuff in your pockets, like your keys, from falling in.
- At home, things like toothbrushes and medication are way better off bouncing against a lid than falling down the hole. Luckily, in public bathrooms there’s less of a chance of this, as the sink is usually in a separate location.
- Lids can be icky and we spread germs by touching icky things and then absent-mindedly touching something else, like our food or our face.
- Another reason we have lids on toilets is to protect our pets. hat goes double for public bathrooms, which battle those germs we talked about with powerful chemicals.
- Ancient Rome’s public bathrooms were simply long wooden benches with several holes that patrons would sit over.
- Sometimes the toilets exploded! These explosions happened because the things that dropped into the toilets contained a mixture of hydrogen and sulfide: making a boom-boom!
- Romans weren’t the first to install public toilets—that honor belongs to the ancient city of Crete. Flourishing and flushing as far back as 3000 BCE, Cretans developed ground floor latrines that flushed by means of an overhead reservoir.
- After Crete, flush toilets disappeared until 1851, when an exhibition in London charged patrons a penny for the honor.
- Lids cost a lot to replace, and they need to be replaced a lot! Believe it or not, people steal them!
- And when the lids aren’t stolen, they break! Hinges are a weak spot on any toilet seat and, if the bathroom is busy, hinges get a lot of use—some of it rough.
- Every city has a budget, and spending a lot of tax-payer money on tougher toilet seats is a hard sell. It’s easier to just remove the lids altogether.

Why People Should Stand on Escalators Side by Side
Every morning thousands of people feel as if they're trying to accomplish a particularly tricky quest. Wrestle out of the packed subway car - done. Avoid getting lost and carried away by the crowd - done. Reach the escalator and join the gridlock at the entrance - done. At least all the commuters are following the common escalator rule: stand on the right side, walk on the left. After all, it's the most effective way to use an escalator, right? Actually, it’s wrong!
Wait, what? But this practice makes perfect sense: you can always choose whether you want to relax and let the machinery do all the work or save time and walk up! Yep, it turns out that we've been using escalators inefficiently all this time.

Please, stay out of my personal space! 5:15
What the supporters of the "everybody-walks" idea say 6:21
#brightside #etiquette #subway
SUMMARY:
- A 2011 study from the University of Greenwich figured out that while 75% of people choose to stand on escalators, only 25% walk up.
- In 2015, the London Underground started a three-week trial of a revolutionary approach to using escalators.
- Employees of Transport for London asked commuters not to walk on the escalators.
- During the morning rush hour between 08:30 to 09:30, the average escalator used to transport about 12,750 people. But during the trial period of standing rules, the same escalator moved 16,220 people!
- People kept pushing each other, shouting, and arguing. It seems that the problem lies in human nature: we want the result right away and are unwilling to postpone it in the interest of the greater good.
- Interestingly, people didn't feel all that indignant about the new rule on longer escalators. On such escalators, commuters already preferred to stand on the walking side rather than move.
- It took a commuter 26 seconds to walk to the top of the moving escalator and 40 seconds to get there while standing still.
- When most commuters stand on the right (or on the left, depending on the country), the weight on the stairs gets distributed unevenly. As a result, one side of the escalator experiences a much greater strain than the other.
- The average American likes to have at least 1 and 1/2 ft (0.45 m) of personal space separating them from other people. Naturally, when you stand on an escalator, this distance is much smaller. It makes people feel uncomfortable.
- But there are also a lot of experts who are sure that walking on escalators is still a much safer and better way to get to your goal.
- The supporters of the "everybody-walks" idea also say that if nobody was standing on the stairs and everybody was moving, there would be no gridlocks at all. Well, although reasonable, this advice doesn't sound like fun when you're returning from the airport with a heavy suitcase.

6 Times Science Proved It Can't Be Boring
I’ve never understood that some people think that science is as boring as watching paint dry. Even if scientists literally watched paint dry, it would probably be part of some fascinating experiment, aimed at the betterment of all humanity, or at least the betterment of some paint.
There are a lot of scientific endeavors that take an immense amount of time, but produce the most amazing results! And here are some of the oddest among them. Elusive pitch drops, alarm bell that just won't stop, an experiment that is supposed to go on for 500 years - these are truly shocking!

-Since ancient time, astronomers have discovered that sunspots have a direct impact on the Earth’s climate. For example, there was a period called Medieval Maximum, from 1100 to 1250, when a lot of sunspots were observed, and which coincides with a period of warmer climate called the Medieval Warm Period.
-There is an alarm placed right in the foyer of Clarendon Laboratory at the University of Oxford that has been ringing since 1840.
-There is a clock at the University of Otago, in New Zealand, that hasn’t been wound since it was made in 1864 by Arthur Beverly and has almost never stopped to this day.
-A funnel was filled in 1927 with a highly dense pitch known to us as tar or asphalt. When the pitch settled down in 1930, its bottom was opened by Professor Thomas Parnell. It took, on average, 8 years for the first 7 drops to fall.
-Charles Cockell from the University of Edinburgh decided to find out how long can dried bacteria survive. In 2014 his ambitious experiment began, and it is supposed to end in 2514.
-In 2016, 12 populations of bacteria named E. coli reached the point of 66,000 generations. All these generations of E. coli are needed to track little evolutionary changes in them and to watch the evolution itself in miniature.

9 Simple Stretching Exercises for Beginners
How does your back feel after a long day at the office or school? What about your neck after you’ve been looking down at your phone for hours? We can’t live without our gadgets, but they can wreak havoc on our bodies if we’re not careful. And even if your eyes aren’t constantly glued to a screen, a short stretching routine can still help anyone who’s dealing with neck, shoulder, and back pain!
Stretching makes the body more flexible, improves our emotional state, and reduces pain. It’s recommended to do these exercises every day. By the way, you don’t even have to go to the gym to do them. You’ll just need 10 minutes of free time and a gym mat.

SUMMARY:
- The Owl exercise stretches the muscles that go from your collarbone and breastbone to behind your ears. They can get pretty overworked holding your head up all day, but they usually do a good job as long as you’re always looking straight ahead.
- Forward Neck Bend helps stretch the muscles on the back and sides of your neck as well as your upper back muscles. They tend to get strained from poor posture as well.
- The Eagle pose not only stretches the muscles in your shoulders, neck, and upper back, but it also improves blood circulation in your upper body.
- The 90/90 stretch will really stretch the front part of your deltoids as well as your pecs. Those are the main muscles in your shoulders and chest.
- By doing pat on the back exercise, you stretch not only the large flat back and neck muscles like your traps and lats but also the muscles located under your arms.
- Butterfly wings effectively stretch your chest muscles as well as your entire upper back.
- Wall sits will not only stretch your lower back, it’s also a nice workout for your abs and leg muscles!
- Rotation stretches help relieve lower back pain by strengthening the core and lower back muscles.
- The Superman exercise helps build strong back extensor muscles, which is really important if you want to avoid lower back pain. On top of that, working these muscles helps you build good posture, which will prevent back pain in the future.
- Do a set of these exercises every day, and you’ll feel more flexible and pain-free in no time. But, again, it's crucial that you do all the exercises slowly and smoothly, without any jerks or sharp movements.

6 Simple Exercises to Lose Weight Without Diets
Do you want to lose weight but the number on the scale isn’t changing? Or do you suffer from face puffiness, body swelling, skin problems, and cellulite? These symptoms may be the signs that the lymphatic system is not functioning properly. It can be compared with a pump that is constantly moving: if it doesn’t work and lymph circulates more slowly, toxins start to accumulate in the body, and the internal organs are affected by the unnecessary stress.
To improve the circulation of lymph, lose weight, and feel better, follow these simple rules: be more active, increase your water intake, try this simple lymphatic drainage massage, and do these exercises. They can boost your lymph circulation. It’ll be especially beneficial for people who currently have a low level of physical activity.

SUMMARY:
- If you're pregnant, suffer from cancer, have inflammation in your body or blood clots in your legs, lymphatic stimulation is definitely not for you. People with lymphatic gland inflammation and lymphadenopathy should also avoid these techniques.
- Lie on your back on a completely flat surface. Cross your arms over your chest, so that the fingers of your left hand would be under your right clavicle and the fingers of your right hand would be under the left one. From here raise your elbows and gently apply a little pressure to these areas with your fingers.
- Stand up or sit down in a comfortable position (keeping your back straight, though). Inhale and draw both of your shoulders all the way up toward your ears. Hold in for a second and exhale, lowering your shoulders back into the starting position. Do it about 15 times.
- Stand up straight with your feet parallel to each other. Get up on your toes and freeze in this position for a sec. Then return to the initial position and roll right back on your heels.
- For this massage you can either stand up or sit down, keeping your back straight. Keep the thumbs and forefingers of both hands together. From this position inhale and put your fingers on the point under your ribs in your solar plexus area. Round your back, press the point, and exhale.
- For “Japanese vibration” you have to lie on your back on a flat surface once again. This time, though, raise your arms and legs up in the air, slightly bending your legs. Your job is to shake them all at the same time and try to relax your limbs in the process.
- Sit down on a flat surface, bend your legs, and make your feet touch each other. Put your hands on your knees and push them quickly to make them bounce.
- Lie on your back on a flat surface, keeping your legs straight. Inhale, bend your legs, try to bring them closer to your chest, and exhale before returning to the initial position.
- To do a jumping jack you have to stand still, keeping your feet together and your arms by your sides. From this position jump up, spreading your legs to about shoulder-width apart and stretching your arms out and over your head.

SUMMARY:
- Wearing high heels regularly throughout your life can shorten your calf muscles by an alarming 13%! Also, high heels are infamous for causing sprains, ingrown toenails, nerve damage, and lower back pain.
- Platforms are never flexible and have very rigid footbeds. As a result, your feet can't bend a certain way when need be, which goes completely against the natural way a person walks.
- When you’re wearing flip-flops, your feet constantly have to hang onto the strap. Over time, this can lead to toe and bone deformities.
- Flats don't provide any arch support for your feet whatsoever. This puts extra pressure on your plantar fascia, which is a muscle that connects your heel and toes.
- Pointed shoes give your feet a really tight squeeze, which is never good, especially if you have wide feet. This extra pressure can lead to all kinds of unpleasant conditions, including nerve pain, blisters, and bunions.
- Running shoes are great for exercising but not for everyday wear. And the real reason behind it is their extra flexibility and softness that, believe it or not, are not good for your feet in the long run.
- Try to go shoe shopping in the afternoon. By this time, your feet will have naturally expanded a little just from being used for so many hours.
- Measure your feet regularly. Podiatric surgeons say that our feet change significantly over time.
- Healthy shoes should be the epitome of balance: flexible enough but still slightly rigid and stable.
- Check the inside of your shoes for any inconvenient tags, seams, and other things that may irritate your foot. If there’s nothing to worry about, it's time to finally walk in them!

SUMMARY:
- According to feng shui, your kids will be calmer and more creative if you decorate their room in black. Who would have thought it? Also, put black accessories around the house or in your office. This will harmonize the space around you.
- If you need to create the illusion of space in your interiors, use white. It will make your house look larger. But you should keep in mind that pure white makes rooms look sterile, bland, and unfriendly.
- Being surrounded by a lot of red may affect your memory in a negative way. This doesn't mean that you'll keep forgetting names or tasks. But with an abundance of red around you, you'll most likely keep recalling unpleasant things.
